Creating StoryMaps with ArcGIS Online
This workshop is a gentle introduction to creating StoryMaps using the ArcGIS Online platform. It is open to anyone interested in xyz. spatial story/narrative.
At the end of this workshop, you will be able to:
- Understand the differences between ArcGIS Public vs. Enterprise accounts for webmaps and StoryMaps, as well as be aware of the limitations of working with a free account
- Gain basic familiarity with ArcGIS StoryMaps by exploring the interface and creating a StoryMap of your own
- Learn how to add multimedia to a StoryMap, as well as customize styling and visualization options
- Create and embed a simple ArcGIS Online webmap into your StoryMap
- Publish and share your StoryMap
- Know where to find data and resources for future mapping projects
Pre-Workshop Setup
1 Create ArcGIS Online Account
You will need to sign up for a free ArcGIS public account ahead of time. If you have an organizational account with Esri, you can choose to use your regular sign-in or create a separate free account. https://www.arcgis.com/index.html

2 Download Workshop Data
Click on the ‘Download Data’ button below to start the download. Once complete, extract the contents of the .zip file.
Please prepare four images that can be freely use for the workshop (links or save locally), or you can use the images provided.
All of the data for this workshop are under the license of creative commons or open data sources, so you are free to download and save it to your computer.
