Day 2: Mapping with QGIS
Day 2 will provide a conceptual and practical orientation to geographic information systems (GIS), a software often used to analyze, modify, and visualize spatial data. You will develop familiarity with QGIS — a free and open-source GIS — by solving puzzles involving common tools and workflows. Finally, you will gain practical experience making maps of your own with QGIS.
Morning Session 9am - 12pm
- Thematic v. Reference maps (MAYBE, if not covered on day 1)
- Conceptual introduction to GIS
- Practical introduction to QGIS
- Activity: Make a reference map
Afternoon Session 1:30pm - 4pm
- Tools and workflows in Thematic Mapping
- Activity 1: Solving spatial computation puzzles
- Activity 2: Make a thematic map
