The following group of pages documents additional content that goes beyond the scope of what will be facilitated in this workshop, yet contains material relevant to mapping for academic publication. Included below are tutorials on adding basemaps, selecting and exporting specific features, designing insets, and creating a variety of thematic maps.
Many of the tools and workflows covered by the following pages are taught in our Thematic Mapping Workshop. Again, for an even more comprehensive introduction to mapping, you are welcome to explore the content of Spatial Visualization in/for Digital Humanities Research, a course developed and taught by Lily Demet and Alex Alisauskas at the 2026 Digital Humanities Summer Institute. Under Days 2 and 3 you will find comprehensive documentation for all kinds of mapping tools and workflows. Practice data for these exercises can be downloaded from the Course Overview page.
