Day 2: Mapping with QGIS

Today’s lesson will provide a conceptual and practical orientation to geographic information systems (GIS), a software used to analyze, modify, and visualize spatial data. You will develop familiarity with QGIS — a free and open-source GIS — by creating reference maps and thematic maps with two sets of data.

In the morning, you’ll make a reference map of Montréal’s historic public bath houses. In the afternoon, we’ll work with pre-prepared historic data from the public history project Montréal, l’avenir du passé (MAP) (Montréal, The Future of the Past) to create thematic maps visualizing demographic data from the 1880s. Tomorrow we’ll return to the data used this morning as we explore common tools and workflows in QGIS.
